Our September mix comes to us courtesy of Montreal DJ, producer, and vocalist Anaïs Ley. Just try not to move to the addictive pulse and otherworldly ambiance of this hour-long sonic journey. The almost industrial samples would hardly suggest the work of a trained classical pianist, but, as the seamless mix proves, Ley is full of surprises.
With a background in sound engineering, Ley was initiated into the world of underground electronic music at the now-shuttered Bar Passeport, where she was impressed by the genre’s potential for bringing people of all backgrounds together. She would soon learn the ways of DJing under the mentorship of DJ Maxrain and the duo Benp & Mart, and went on to spin shows at Passeport and Montreal nightlife fixture Salon Daomé. After the closure of Passeport, Ley took a break from DJing to hone her production skills, and has since joined shoegaze act The Scroll as a backing vocalist, with gigs including Toronto’s well-known RAW Festival.
