Interview performed and written by Cécile Richetta.
Caki is a delightfully honest artist, who humbly shares the work that she feels honoured to have exhibited. Born and raised in Montreal, Caki is open-minded and driven. When she decided that she was not living up to her full potential in school, she entered the art world to discover her own potential. Indeed, Caki has an eye for spotting potentials in new initiatives, like the Mural festival in Montreal. While the work she exhibited at Centerfold deals in photography, she also uses other mediums to convey her philosophy like videography and writing. She would “love to do everything”, but photography is more accessible for her, and she feels more comfortable publishing her pictures.
With this exhibition, Caki reached the point where she could tell herself “this is it, this is what I want to be showing people”, pictures of happy beings, of naked and crude humanity, of those moments where the walls or the masks fall, and all is left is this rawness and honesty. Her artistic approach consists of putting herself out of her comfort zone; she only takes her camera out when she travels, even if it is only an hour away from Montreal, because getting out of her “natural habitat” — taking pictures in places where she feels she does not necessarily belong — is her way of accessing vulnerability and truth in people.
When asked about initiatives like Centerfold, Caki looked grateful for these young and organic initiatives. She has seen the process and effort to put exhibition like Centerfold together, and praises the platform that introduces young and new artists in a fun and organic way, making it “so fair for everyone”. Without a doubt, Centrefold has created an opportunity for people to learn about things they would not necessarily see, according to Caki, and for this she is forever grateful.
