The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, and David McAtee, as well as the assaults on black trans people like Iyanna Dior, are not isolated incidents, be it in the United States or here in Canada. Police brutality, systemic racism, transphobia, and the silent compliance of those who stand by and do nothing are constant social realities that need to change.
Though our statement of values reads that we try to be “inclusive as possible,” our approach thus far has not been focused enough on outreach. Moving forward, Graphite will commit to actively seeking out and highlighting the work of creators who identify themselves as BIPOC/LGBTQ. We are currently looking to fill a couple of roles on our editorial board, and are always looking for staff writers; in both endeavours we seek diverse representation. Please write to us at graphitesubmissions@gmail.com.
To all allies: Do not be silent. There are plenty of resources, articles, and master-docs out there listing ways to engage, places to donate, petitions to sign, and protests to join. We will be sharing these on our social media as well. Inform yourself, be active, wherever and however you can.
