Movement - Corona Theater

Let me rewind and bring you guys up to date on the situation.

Back in 2010, I was just kicking it in Normanhurst, in my friend’s bedroom (out of respect for our friendship, I shall keep his name hidden, but for the sake of the article, I am going to call him King Beatz200). Both of us were talking about the bands we loved, I shared some French music, he introduced me to some Australian bands and then finally he showed me his musical world and the songs he had been working on. During this endless conversation, the one thing that stood out to me the most was this burning hidden drive within King Beatz200. I remember thinking right then and there that one day I was going to go to one of his shows. I left before it all began but overtime, King Beatz200 and two of his mates started working on their sound and with it, a band formed; this band became Movement. Four years later, Movement is the opening act for Banks at Corona Theater in Montreal.

This is Banks. This is Movement.

Also, this is Banks. This is more of Movement.

Nothing compares to the excitement you get before a concert. That ridiculously happy for no reason feeling, that butterfly stomach sensation, that excitement that clogs your mind all day because you can’t possible imagine thinking about anything else but that concert. This time, that feeling was one hundred billion times stronger. I met King Beatz200 before he started his band, and I hadn’t seen him for four years.

I arrive at the venue, and it is packed with people, which put a joker-like smile on my face (why so serioussss?). You can feel the excitement in the air. I got there right before the show started and I got to witness the final preparation of the stage. I love watching all the audio engineers run around on stage, plugging in the mountain of chords laying around. It’s always a surprise, how are they going to set up the stage this time? How is the band going to be positioned?

I get myself a drink at the bar. Suddenly the glass around me shatters and I have a drastic realization. I am alone at a concert. Don’t get me wrong, ain’t no body better company than me, myself, and I. But here I am, surrounded by people in groups. Everyone is socializing with one another but ignoring all the other people around them. The cool thing was because I was alone, no one was paying attention to me but I could observe all the interactions. Boy, people do weird things when they think you aren’t looking at them, but another story for another time. Deciding it was silly to just stand by myself, I moved closer to the stage.

The band finally came on stage. One of the members went directly to the mic and all he said was “Hey we are Movement and we are from Sydney” and everyone in the crowd lost it. People started screaming and the music started playing. Movement’s sound hits you like an overwhelming wave of sensual sensations. You feel your body soak up the music and take over every movement you make. Your hips start to sway, your hands run up the sides of your body and into your hair. The music makes you feel like you are getting closer and closer to the sun. Everyone in the crowd danced in unison, we all had our eyes closed, all of us gravitating towards Movement’s music. For the duration of their show, Movement became the puppet masters of everyone in that room, the crowd was at the music’s mercy. It was the sweetest kind of mercy anyone could hope for.

PS. Movement was the first act to Banks. Banks is this gorgeously Greek goddess-like figure with a captivating intensity. I think everyone in the room wanted to be her or be with her. Anyways, this was what made me fall in love with Banks in the first place.
