LA NUIT D’HUNTER S. THOMPSON from NEBULAE on Vimeo.
1. Tell me, who are you? What’s Nebulae’s story? It started with 4 friends who we met around a passion for art, history and electronic music. We quickly realized that our diverse background could merge to create an original project, creating an event that combines electronic with an art exhibition. We experienced our project in the underground scene with events in our own loft but it became quickly over crowded. We then decided to make Nebulae a non-profit organization since March 2014.
2. What makes Nebulae different from other party collectives in Montreal?
Nebulae wants to challenge Montreal Night-Owls’ view about the way they perceive the traditional museum experience and awaken their interest in the artistic heritage! We designs immersive exhibitions, composed of a trail of installations, images and impertinent narratives on a great artist from the past. People walk around, a glass in their hands, listen to electronic music and dance.
3. The theme for your upcoming event is the life and work of the author Hunter S. Thompson. How come? What do you see in him that made you want to dress your party in his clothes?
Hunter was a very easy choice. This journalist was at his height during the sixties and seventy and completely revolutionized his discipline. Everybody knows him without really knowing him. People usually know his name or the movie “Fear and loathing in Las Vegas” based on his famous book, where Johnny Depp embodies his character, Raoul Duke. He invented the gonzo, a style of extremely subjective literary journalism, and lived life as a star, debauchery, fun, and risks. Hunter is ideal to spread our concept. He lived in a period not too far from us and left an important mark in the counterculture to the point that it became an icon in certain circles. In the future, we plan to expose older artists such as Jerome Bosch (1560 ) or Egon Schiele ( 1900 ), but for now, Hunter is the right man for the job.
4. Do you think there’s a lack of culture (whatever you consider that to be) in today’s generation? Or more specifically, in Montreal’s nightlife scene? If so, are you trying to fill that niche?
We don’t think there is a lack of culture, there is more a growing envy to reinvent our experience with art. Therefore, Montreal is a good ground to develop and experience new project. It’s the cultural capital of Canada, a lot of event takes places here already and the public is willing to be the guinea pig of those new projects. It is especially true regarding digital art, which takes more and more a bigger place in Montreal nightlife scene. We fill a niche in the sense that we are a little “Old Fashion”, we use raw material to build our exhibition, we like it “home-made” and most of all we look at an artist from the past, which is pretty unusual in electronic parties.
5. When people leave your events, what impression do you wish to leave them with?
A good time, in a strange place, filled with good music, being part of an original concept and most important, that they got strike by the life and the work of the artist we showcase.
6. Do you already have some ideas for what your next themes will be? We’re excited to find out.
A good surprise is never revealed.
